NTPC partners Japan’s ENEOS for green hydrogen

In a significant move to strengthen India–Japan clean energy cooperation, NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) — a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Ltd — has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Japan’s ENEOS Corporation to collaborate on green hydrogen and its derivatives, including green methanol.

The MoU was signed during the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, underscoring India’s growing role in the global transition toward low-carbon fuels. The partnership will explore the creation of a supply framework for green hydrogen and green methanol produced in India and exported to Japan.

Focus on Pudimadaka Green Hydrogen Hub

The collaboration will leverage NGEL’s upcoming Pudimadaka Green Hydrogen Hub in Andhra Pradesh, which is set to be one of India’s largest integrated clean fuel complexes.

Spread over 1,200 acres, the facility will produce green hydrogen and convert it into green ammonia and green methanol for both domestic applications and exports.

This partnership aims to meet Japan’s rising demand for low-carbon energy while establishing India as a key supplier in the global green hydrogen value chain.

According to NGEL, the partnership is aligned with NTPC’s goal of achieving 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032 and supports the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which envisions India as a global hub for green hydrogen production and exports.

By integrating ENEOS’s global expertise in energy trading and hydrogen technologies with NGEL’s robust renewable infrastructure, the collaboration is expected to accelerate the creation of a sustainable energy corridor between India and Japan.

Strengthening India–Japan Energy Ties

The agreement represents another milestone in the expanding clean energy partnership between India and Japan, particularly in the hydrogen and ammonia sectors.

For Japan — which aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 — sourcing green fuels from India offers a stable and cost-effective alternative.

For NTPC Green Energy, the partnership marks a major step in its evolution from a domestic renewable power producer to a global exporter of green hydrogen derivatives, reinforcing India’s leadership in the global energy transition.
