Mitsubishi enters biogas business through investment in KIS Group

Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation has announced that it has acquired a minority stake in the biogas construction firm KIS Group’s Indonesia operations, signaling its foray into the global biogas industry.

Founded in 2006 by KR Raghunath, the KIS Group said it plans to invest around $1 billion in renewable gas and biofuel projects across Southeast Asia and India by 2030.

The Singapore headquartered KIS Group held in its official statement, “Mitsubishi Corporation, one of Japan’s largest global integrated business enterprises, has acquired a minority equity stake in its Indonesia operations. This investment marks Mitsubishi Corporation’s first entry into the global biogas market.”

While financial details and the size of the stake were not disclosed, KIS Group held that Mitsubishi’s participation will help accelerate its global expansion plans, with aims to enter North America, South America and Europe within the next five years.

The strategic partnership will focus on co-developing and commercialising advanced biogas, BioCNG, and BioLNG technologies, leveraging Mitsubishi’s extensive international network spanning over 90 countries. The collaboration is expected to strengthen KIS Group’s operational efficiency, supply chain resilience, and environmental governance.

KIS Group has executed biomethane and renewable gas projects in 11 countries, holding long-term supply contracts with Unilever and Shell, and collaborations with Toyota, Godrej, Sinarmas, Banas Dairy and Maruti Suzuki.

Last year, the firm informed that it has received two more repeat orders for the construction of two biogas plants with a capacity of 100 MT/day for each plant from Banas Dairy. Both the projects are to be developed in Palanpur District of Gujarat.

This year, TKIL Industries has also roped in KIS Group to advance the production of CBG to expand into the Bio-Chemicals sector marking its business diversification quest.
