The Haryana State Federation of Cooperative Sugar Mills Limited plans to establish compressed biogas (CBG) projects at multiple sugar mills across the state. In this, the Karnal Cooperative Sugar Mill selected as one of the project sites. The CBG facility will be developed under a public–private partnership (PPP) model.
The proposed CBG plant will utilise press mud generated at the sugar mill to produce clean energy, supporting a circular economy by converting industrial waste into a renewable fuel. According to reports, the tendering process for the project is currently underway at the federation’s headquarters, and the Karnal mill is expected to be allotted the plant.
Meanwhile, during the ongoing 2025–26 crushing season, the Karnal mill has crushed 18.29 lakh quintals of sugarcane so far. The current sugar recovery rate stands at 9.10 per cent, while the cumulative recovery has reached 9.29 per cent. The mill has produced 1.60 lakh quintals of refined sugar to date.
In addition, the mill’s 18 MW cogeneration plant has generated a total of 2.185 crore kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity so far. Of this, 1.41 crore units were exported to Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN), earning the mill a net additional revenue of Rs 8.97 crore.
The first biogas plant in Haryana was established in 1991 in Panipat. Today the state is rapidly expanding its biogas sector and 17 Compressed Biogas (CBG) plants have been operational as of early 2026. The Haryana State Federation of Cooperative Sugar Mills Limited is developing CBG plants at sugar mills to convert press mud into energy.
