Jakson Green to Build World’s First Methanol Production Plant with NTPC

Jakson Green, a firm in the renewable and new energy space, has won a first-of-its-kind project from National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) to establish a Methanol synthesis facility at Vindhyachal, Madhya Pradesh.

Methanol is a cleaner alternative fuel that can be used for various purposes, including power generation and transportation. The subject Methanol synthesis plant will be a part of NTPC’s Vindhyachal Thermal Power plant with a production capacity of 10 tonnes-per-day (TPD). The Methanol production unit is being designed to convert 20 TPD CO2 to 10 TPD Methanol through a catalytic hydrogenation process, utilising CO2 from thermal plant flue gas through a carbon capture unit and green hydrogen produced by electrolysis.

Jakson Green will oversee the entire design, engineering, procurement, and construction of this project on turnkey basis, in partnership with NTPC and their Japanese technology provider for the Methanol synthesis process. The firm says it will establish the plant on a fast-track basis and is confident that the project’s success will pave the way for more such projects in the coming future.

Elaborating on the project, Bikesh Ogra, CEO and Managing Director of Jakson Green Private Limited said, “We believe that Methanol production is a key element in India’s transition to a low-carbon economy, and we are proud to be at the forefront of the movement. We are thankful to NTPC for giving us an opportunity to partner them in developing this useful Hydrocarbon and propagate its widespread use for a cleaner and greener world. We are confident that this Methanol synthesis plant built in association with NTPC will strengthen India’s vision of becoming a Methanol economy, which will, in turn, reduce India’s dependence on crude oil imports and mitigate pollution.”

India envisions the creation of a Methanol economy, which will help reduce carbon emissions and promote a sustainable environment. It will reduce India’s dependence on oil imports and simultaneously curb the pollution from electricity sector. Further, it will help India meet its Paris Climate Change Agreement obligation to reduce carbon emissions by 33-35% by 2030.

Jakson Green is a new energy transition platform backed by India headquartered infrastructure and renewable major, Jakson Group. The firm plans to deliver 10 GW renewable energy assets by 2025 and 20 GW by 2030.

NTPC, India’s largest power utility with an installed capacity of 71,594 MW (including JVs), plans to become a 130 GW company by 2032.
