India Glycols Ltd increases Gorakhpur ethanol capacity by 200 KLPD

In a major development, India Glycols Limited has increased its grain-based distillery capacity by an additional 200 KLPD at its Gorakhpur facility in Uttar Pradesh. This expansion includes biofuel ethanol production which means ethanol-to-biofuel conversion that would be bringing the total combined capacity of the plant to 310 KLPD.

India Glycols Limited held that the newly enhanced facility has now been commissioned. Indian ethanol producers are ramping up their production capacities in alignment with the government’s ethanol blending goals, contributing to the country’s growing biofuel sector.

With this expansion, the company has completed its planned capacity enhancement for grain-based ethanol production at Gorakhpur.

I Am Renew reported in February that Glycols was planning to increase its grain-based distillery capacity at the Gorakhpur Plant and also step up the biofuel ethanol capacity at both the Gorakhpur and Kashipur (Uttarakhand) Plants.

Presently, India Glycols Ltd. is involved in manufacturing green technology-based bulk, specialty & performance chemicals, natural gums, spirits, industrial gases, sugar, and nutraceuticals.

Galloping Ethanol Story

Grains have become a key raw material for ethanol production in India, with their contribution to biofuel output expected to rise. As per reports, grain-derived ethanol could account for over 60% of total ethanol production in the current Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2024-25.

India’s ethanol blending program continues to make significant strides, bringing the country closer to its target of 20% ethanol blending in petrol. As of February in the current ESY 2024-25, ethanol blending reached 19.7%, while the cumulative average blending from November 2024 to February 2025 stood at 18%.
