IIT Bombay and HSBC India Green Hydrogen Programme selects 6 projects in India

Six groundbreaking projects in green hydrogen technology from leading educational institutions have been shortlisted for incubation under the IIT Bombay and HSBC India Green Hydrogen Programme, a collaborative initiative aimed at accelerating the development and deployment of sustainable hydrogen technologies.

According to an official statement, the Green Hydrogen programme attracted a large number of innovative proposals from six IITs, the National Institute of Technology, and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research. Following a rigorous selection process led by a steering committee comprising industry experts and senior IIT Bombay faculty, six projects were chosen for incubation.

These selected projects, spearheaded by researchers, scientists, and students across India, address critical challenges in green hydrogen production, storage, transportation, and utilization. They include advancements such as indigenous hydrogen storage systems to reduce carbon emissions from commercial vehicles, cost-effective hydrogen generators, and alternative burners designed to improve air quality—a pressing issue in Indian metropolitan areas.

The shortlisted solutions will undergo incubation at the IIT Bombay Innovation Centre, where they will be nurtured and refined for commercial deployment. The programme aims to prepare these technologies for market readiness by the end of the incubation period, providing comprehensive support to scale their impact and extend their reach.

This partnership between IIT Bombay and HSBC underscores a shared commitment to advancing green hydrogen production, enhancing its efficiency, and positioning it as a scalable energy solution. Launched in 2023 by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the three-year initiative supports India’s broader National Green Hydrogen Mission, envisioning green hydrogen as a strategic alternative fuel across industries.

“We look forward to working with IIT Bombay to nurture these six innovations to make Green Hydrogen a cost-effective, scalable, and sustainable proposition,” said Hitendra Dave, CEO, HSBC India.

“This collaboration underscores our firm commitment to supporting the Indian government’s visionary National Green Hydrogen Mission which positions green hydrogen not just as a sustainable fuel, but as a cornerstone of the country’s future energy landscape,” said Shireesh Kedare, Director, IIT Bombay.

The National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to establish a production capacity of at least 5 million metric tonnes per year by 2030, reinforcing India’s energy independence and its role in the global green hydrogen transition.
