Green hydrogen projects of Rs 46,000 crore to come up in Odisha

The Odisha state government has given the green light to three hydrogen projects aimed at promoting the green hydrogen and green ammonia sector within the state. This initiative is part of a broader industrial push, which saw approvals granted for a total of 12 industrial projects. The cumulative investment for all these projects amounts to Rs 85,000 crore, with the hydrogen projects representing just over half of this sum.

The approvals for these projects were granted by the state’s High-Level Clearance Authority, led by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. Among the approved projects, ReNew E-Fuels Pvt Ltd has received clearance for two green hydrogen and green methanol projects in the eastern state, with a combined investment of Rs 19,000 crore.

ReNew E-Fuels Pvt Ltd intends to establish a green hydrogen and green methanol manufacturing unit in Malkangiri district, producing 100,000 tonnes per annum of green hydrogen and 500,000 tonnes per annum of green methanol. This project comes with an estimated cost of Rs 10,000 crore.

Simultaneously, ReNew plans to set up a facility in Rayagada district, producing 60,000 tonnes per annum of green hydrogen and 300,000 tonnes per annum of green methanol, at an investment of Rs 9,000 crore.

Welspun New Energy Ltd has received approval to establish a green ammonia unit in Kendrapada district, with a production capacity of 700,000 metric tonnes per annum. The investment for this project is just under Rs 14,000 crore.

In the third instance, Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India Private Ltd has been granted permission to set up a green ammonia manufacturing unit in Gopalpur, located in the state’s Ganjam district. This facility is projected to produce 720,000 metric tonnes per annum of green ammonia, with an investment of Rs 13,000 crore.

In the previous month, REC Ltd. entered into collaboration with the Acme Group to offer a funding of Rs 16,000 crore for the development of a visionary Green Hydrogen and Ammonia facility in Gopalpur, Odisha. Simultaneously, REC Ltd. also formed an agreement with the Avaada Group, committing Rs 15,000 crore towards a forthcoming Green Hydrogen and Ammonia facility in the same location.

This strategic move aligns with the Odisha government’s issuance of the State Renewable Energy Policy 2022. The policy aims to attract investments in clean energy within the state, with a particular emphasis on emerging sectors such as green hydrogen and green ammonia, among others.
