The state government of Goa has approved the development of a compressed biogas (CBG) plant that would be based on municipal solid waste (MSW). The CBG project would come up at Headland Sada in Mormugao, with a processing capacity of 25 tonnes per day (TPD).
As per reports, the green energy project will be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 12 crore. The Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) holds that the decentralised biogas plant is aimed at promoting renewable energy generation in the form of CBG while ensuring scientific management of segregated wet waste.
The plant will be set up at the Headland Sada waste management site under the jurisdiction of the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC). It will be implemented under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The state government is not expected to have financial burden for the development. Authorities indicated that if the model proves successful, similar projects could be replicated in other parts of Goa.
The project is expected to reduce dependence on landfill disposal through daily waste treatment and support the utilisation of by-products such as compost. The CBG project aligns with sustainable development goals and promotes a circular economy model by converting waste into value-added resources.
Six companies have bid for the tender to build the 100 TPD CBG plant at Bainguinim – Srinivas Waste Management Services, Organic Recycling Systems, Hyderabad Integrated MSW, Hindustan Waste Treatment, 3R Management and HNB Engineers.
At present there are two waste treatment plants in Goa. They are situated at Saligao and Cacora that generate electricity. The upcoming Headland Sada biogas project will produce CBG.
Although Goa is a small state but it has making some strides lately in the bioenergy & waste management sector. Recently, the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant laid the foundation stone for a 300 KLPD grain-based ethanol plant at the Navelim Industrial Area in Bicholim.
