Gurgaon based Engineers India Limited (EIL) has initiated on-ground activities for its 5 tonnes-per-day Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant at the MIDC Halkarni Industrial Area in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. The foundation stone for the project was laid by Pankaj Jain, Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, in the presence of EIL Chairperson and Managing Director Vartika Shukla, members of the board and senior company officials.
The project is being developed as a self-funded initiative by EIL and is designed to produce 5 TPD of CBG using bio-methanation or anaerobic digestion technology. The CBG plant will process around 125 TPD of press mud, a by-product of the sugar industry, sourced directly from sugar mills as well as through aggregators.
EIL held that by converting industrial waste into clean fuel, the facility aims to reduce environmental pollution while improving resource efficiency.
The CBG produced at the plant will be supplied to Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL) and distributed for vehicular use through HPCL’s retail outlets. This is expected to help lower carbon emissions from the transport sector and encourage the adoption of renewable fuels as an alternative to conventional fossil-based fuels.
In addition to biogas, the EIL CBG plant will generate Fermented Organic Manure (FOM) and Liquid Fermented Organic Manure (LFOM) as value-added by-products. These organic fertilizers will support sustainable agriculture, reduce dependence on chemical inputs and strengthen the circular economy by returning nutrients to the soil.
The CBG project underlines strategic push of EIL to expand its presence in sustainable energy infrastructure, complementing its core strengths in engineering and project management.
EIL has been on the forefront of bioenergy development in the country. In Assam, Engineers India Limited (EIL) and Assam Bio Ethanol Private Limited (ABEPL) have achieved a breakthrough by successfully producing 99.7% purified ethanol from bamboo biomass at Numaligarh—the country’s first commercial 2G bioethanol plant.
The CBG project aligns closely with national initiatives such as SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation), Atmanirbhar Bharat and India’s broader energy transition and climate commitments.
