BPCL to invest Rs 100 crore in CBG plants in Raipur & Bhilai

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the officials of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL), the Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority (CBDA), and the municipal corporations of Raipur and Bhilai the twin big cities of India, and the aim of the aMoU is to produce Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) in Chhattisgarh.

Under the terms of the agreement, BPCL, a central Public Sector Undertaking (PSU), will establish CBG plants in Raipur and Bhilai, investing approximately Rs 100 crore in each plant. The massive investment will lead to CBG plants with a capacity of 100-150 tonnes per day.

The MoU signing took place in the presence of Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and Deputy CM Arun Sao at the former’s official residence.

Chief Minister Sai emphasized that the establishment of CBG plants represents a significant stride toward cleaner cities, sustainable energy, and reduced carbon emissions.

The biofuel production in the two CBG plants will utilize about 200-250 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste daily. Sai noted that BPCL’s investment of approximately Rs 100 crore for these plants will generate around 60,000 man-days of direct and indirect employment annually.

Furthermore, upon reaching full production and sales capacity, the state stands to gain Rs 45 lakh per year in GST revenue. Additionally, the organic fertilizer produced as a by-product will support organic farming initiatives in the state.

The MoU was signed by Sumit Sarkar, Chief Executive Officer of the Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority; Anurag Saravagi, Chief General Manager of BPCL, Mumbai; Avinash Mishra, Commissioner of Raipur Municipal Corporation; and Devesh Kumar Dhruv, Commissioner of Bhilai Municipal Corporation, according to officials.

The BPCL Kochi Refinery is also mulling to begin the construction of the compressed biogas (CBG) plant it has planned at Brahmapuram. Finalizing tender procedures for the project, the refinery awaits approval from the city corporation council.
