BPCL, Petroleum Ministry organises workshop on compressed biogas (CBG)

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) partnered with the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG) to host a comprehensive workshop focused on advancing the adoption of Compressed Biogas (CBG) as a sustainable energy solution. The workshop took place at the Renaissance Bengaluru Race Course Hotel in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

Under the initiative of the Petroleum Ministry, the workshop facilitated open dialogue among various stakeholders, including bank officials, CBG producers, entrepreneurs, technology providers, and representatives from organizations such as the World Bank, Indian Biogas Association, and Oil and Gas marketing companies.

Discussions centered around the pivotal role of CBG in India’s energy transition and its significance as a green fuel contributing to the SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) initiative.

Following the workshop, participants had the opportunity to visit a CBG plant to gain firsthand experience and insights into CBG production processes. This hands-on approach aimed to deepen understanding and collaboration in the CBG sector.

Anurag Saraogi, BPCL’s CGM (Biofuels), emphasized the importance of the workshop in sensitizing bank officials about financing CBG projects, crucial for advancing sustainable energy solutions. He highlighted CBG’s potential as a green fuel with properties similar to CNG, stressing the importance of scaling up production for a cleaner future.

Arun Kumar, Director at the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, underscored the critical importance of CBG in achieving net-zero emissions by 2070, reflecting the government’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions. The workshop addressed key aspects of CBG projects, including financing, technical evaluation, financial modeling, and best practices in implementation.

In his keynote address, Ramesh Krishna from the US Petroleum Ministry emphasized India’s strategic vision for sustainable energy solutions and the pivotal role of CBG in achieving these objectives. He reiterated the government’s commitment to environmental stewardship and urged stakeholders to align with national priorities, fostering collaboration and innovation in the CBG sector.

The event provided a platform for fruitful discussions, exchange of insights, and collaboration opportunities to accelerate the adoption of CBG as a sustainable energy source in India. BPCL remains dedicated to supporting initiatives promoting environmental sustainability and energy security.
