PAU’s Fuma Labs Gets Patent for Biomass Treatment Process

A startup trained by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) under the Punjab Agri-Business Incubator (PABI), Fuma Labs Pvt Ltd, operating under the brand name Craste, has achieved a significant milestone by securing a patent for their innovative “Process for Treatment of Biomass for Pulping and Biorefinery Application.”

This breakthrough represents a major leap in sustainable technology, offering tremendous potential for both the agricultural and industrial sectors. Craste’s novel process effectively addresses the challenge of converting agricultural biomass into valuable products for pulping and biorefinery applications. The patented method not only boosts biomass utilization efficiency but also supports global sustainability goals by reducing waste and promoting the use of renewable resources.

Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal, Vice-Chancellor of PAU, praised the development, highlighting its importance for both the environment and the economy. Dr. T.S. Riar, Principal Investigator at PABI and Additional Director of Communication, commended the PABI team’s hard work in guiding startups. “The patent awarded to Craste showcases the innovative capabilities emerging from our country. This process promises to transform agricultural waste into valuable resources, fostering sustainable development and supporting our farmers,” he stated.

Dr. Poonam Sachdev, Co-Principal Investigator at PABI, underscored the scientific and practical significance of the patented process. Dr Sachdev mentioned, “Craste’s patented process is poised to revolutionize the treatment of agricultural biomass, opening new opportunities for the pulp and biorefinery industries. This innovation exemplifies the potential of sustainable technology and highlights the need for a robust IPR framework to support and nurture innovative startups.”

Er. Karanvir Gill, Business Manager at PABI, discussed the broader impact of intellectual property rights (IPR) on startups. He stated, “Securing a patent is a crucial milestone, especially in sustainable technologies. It provides a competitive edge and encourages further innovation by protecting the company’s intellectual assets. Craste’s success demonstrates how IPR can drive growth and ensure long-term viability in the marketplace.”
