TruAlt Bioenergy, GAIL Form JV To Build CBG Plant Network

TruAlt Bioenergy Ltd, a biofuels producer, has entered into a joint venture with GAIL (India) Ltd, a Maharatna Public Sector Undertaking and a natural gas company. This collaboration can help to accelerate the development of India’s Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) sector, the company said in a press release.

As per the agreement, GAIL would acquire 49% equity stakes in Leafiniti Bioenergy Private Limited (LBPL), a 100% subsidiary of TruAlt, subject to satisfactory completion of Condition Precedents and DIPAM approval. LBPL has owned and operated a 10.2 TPD press-mud-based CBG plant in the State of Karnataka since 2021.

“The collaboration represents a significant milestone in the nation’s clean energy roadmap, combining TruAlt Bioenergy’s expertise in bioenergy production with GAIL’s extensive infrastructure and market reach. The JV will focus on establishing multiple greenfield CBG plants as part of a phased rollout designed to scale rapidly and deliver measurable environmental, economic and social impact.”, the company added.

Greenfield Plant Project

TruAlt Bioenergy said, “In its first phase, the joint venture will roll out six greenfield plants, each with a capacity of 12 tonnes per day mainly based on associated products from Sugar mills, delivering a combined annual output of 23,976 tonnes of CBG. This buildout is set to create 700–1,050 direct and indirect jobs, catalyzing rural employment and economic activity.”

It further added, “In addition to clean energy, the facilities would have potential to generate high-value agricultural inputs, including 83,916 tonnes of Fermented Organic Manure (FOM) and 4,03,596 tonnes of Liquid Fermented Organic Manure (LFOM) annually. This is going to improve soil health and also strengthen circular agriculture, ensuring that farmers become active stakeholders and beneficiaries in India’s green energy transition.”

From an environmental perspective, the company explained, “The JV’s first phase is projected to displace approximately 17,000 tonnes of fossil fuels annually and avoid 8,000 tonnes of methane emissions per annum, contributing meaningfully to India’s climate commitments, including its net-zero by 2070 vision.”

Together, the company is said to be laying the foundation for a decentralised, circular energy economy that uplifts rural livelihoods, transforms agricultural residues into economic value, and delivers measurable carbon reductions.

Leaders’ Perspective

Rajeev Kumar Singhal, Director (Business Development), GAIL, said, “This strategic joint venture will not only help in energy security but will also strengthen GAIL’s image as a clean fuel company. This joint venture will provide impetus to the ongoing biofuel revolution happening in India, driving innovation and sustainable growth in the energy sector.”

Vijay Nirani, Founder & Managing Director, TruAlt Bioenergy, said, “TruAlt Bioenergy has been at the forefront of India’s bioenergy transition in line with the Government of India’s vision for a biofuel-led economy. Over the years, we have emerged as a prominent and diversified player in the biofuels industry, particularly in the Ethanol sector.  Through this strategic partnership with GAIL, we are creating a robust national ecosystem for Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG), enabling a seamless shift to energy solutions that are both economically viable and environmentally restorative. We believe CBG is India’s definitive answer to clean, circular energy.
